Christmas Recital

Tonight was Landon's Christmas Piano Recital. He got to play Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer for his solo piece and then two ensemble pieces as well. Before my mom had to cut back a bit a few years ago, she had oodles of students who took group lessons. Meaning, she had four full sized keyboards hooked up and each student used their own keyboard and they all played together. So good for kids who need help with timing and counting (which is most of them!) Anyway...she got out three of her keyboards and had the kids play a few songs as ensembles. Each child playing a different part (harmonies and what not). It makes it so much fun for the kids. Landon was really having a hard time with one of the songs, and so in order to coax him into playing I told him that I would play the treble clef during the recital and all he had to play was the bass clef notes. He did awesome. And it's always fun to play a "duet" with him. He even got to play the final song, We Wish You A Merry Christmas, with a couple other students while we all sang along. He was so proud of himself and he had so much fun with it. I think all of the kids did. No memorizing pieces, just playing fun Christmas tunes with their friends.
Good job Landon! You did great!

That is so great. When did he start taking piano? I would like to start Reagan, but I am not sure if he is too young and since I will be teaching him, I want him to really want to do it, any advice?

He started taking lessons at the beginning of 1st grade. My mom has taught Kindergarteners, but not "real" music. No lines and spaces music. A lot of clapping rhythmns and learning types of notes and what not. The basics. She prefers to start kids at least in the first grade because they've got a better attention span.
You are brave trying to teach him yourself. I thought about doing it with Landon but knew he wouldn't learn anything. We butt heads too much as it is. My mom attempted to teach me when I was little, but it never worked out. I always took from someone else even when she had numerous students. Just easier I think. ;0)

I didn't realize we didn't take pictures of YOU with Landon. You're always the "picture taker" and you need to give the camera to Jaysen some times! Anyway, it was fun tonight and Landon did awesome.

I wish I could have been there to listen to Landon play. Rachel and Aubrey's piano teacher has ensemble recitals as well. She has two pianos, and has up to three kids on each piano. It is a fun way to have recitals.

How fu nI took piano as a kid and lets just say I did not love it but it was okay I remember the recitals always scared me to death
our incentive to keep playing was and is whoever plays the best when my mom dies gets her piano it was her moms and she played the best when her mom died and so she got it however sad as it might seem my brother who never took lesons plays the best he can hear music then play it CRAZY but I have a hunch that he will get the piano a little thought for your boys to keep playing.
